## **Overview**
[Polygon](https://polygon.technology/) is a suite of Ethereum-based scaling solutions allowing developers to move computation and data storage off Ethereum and into low-fee, high-speed development environments.
## **History**
[Polygon](https://polygon.technology/) was initially launched as “Matic Network” in 2017. It was co-founded by [Jaynti Kanani](https://www.linkedin.com/in/jdkanani/), [Sandeep Nailwal](https://www.linkedin.com/in/sandeep-nailwal-60709a33/?originalSubdomain=ae), [Anurag Arjun](https://www.linkedin.com/in/anuragarjun/?miniProfileUrn=urn%3Ali%3Afs_miniProfile%3AACoAAAEMb9sBAkkrhaGE58Emz37uePlEwSJo3ng), and [Mihailo Bjelic](https://www.linkedin.com/in/mihailo-bjelic-33aaa764/) to address blockchain scaling and usability issues. Some blockchains, like Ethereum, face higher latency and transaction costs. Layer-2 scaling solutions or external sidechain networks can act as load balances for networks that cannot inherently scale as user activity increases.
Matic Network (now Polygon PoS) [launched](https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2020/06/03/matic-launches-mainnet-aiming-to-bring-more-firepower-to-ethereum/) its mainnet and core contracts on Ethereum in May 2020. At launch, all validators on the PoS chain were managed by the Matic Foundation, one of the entities behind the network's development and adoption. The foundation gradually relinquished its control by onboarding third-party validators throughout 2020 and began [shutting down its nodes](https://twitter.com/0xPolygon/status/1355489103630852104) in February 2021.
Matic Network [rebranded](https://polygontech.medium.com/matic-network-becomes-polygon-ethereums-internet-of-blockchains-expands-mission-and-tech-scope-364932c02cd0) to Polygon in February 2021 to offer developers a suite of scaling solutions beyond its existing PoS chain. Since the pivot, Polygon acquired the ZK-rollup solution [Hermez](https://www.coindesk.com/business/2021/08/13/polygon-merges-with-hermez-network-in-250m-deal/) (Polygon Hermez) and the ZK-rollup solution [Mir Protocol](https://www.coindesk.com/business/2021/12/09/polygon-acquires-ethereum-scaling-startup-mir-for-400m-in-matic/) (Polygon Zero). Additionally, Polygon has worked on other initiatives, such as [Polygon Miden](https://polygon.technology/polygon-miden) and [Polygon Nightfall](https://polygon.technology/blog/introducing-polygon-nightfall-mainnet-decentralized-private-transactions-for-enterprise), in an attempt to bring more privacy to Ethereum transactions. Based on a commercially reasonable search, only Polygon Miden is still in development (public testnet). The other initiatives have been discontinued, combined with others, or spun off as separate, independent projects.
Notable milestones in the project’s development include:
